Map of Wallonia

Map of the Walloon Region, commonly called Wallonia, one of the three Belgian regions; it is located in the south of Belgium. It was created in 1970 following the demands of the Walloon Movement, but it was not until the law of August 8, 1980 that it acquired executive and decree powers. These powers were from July 16, 1993 transmitted to the Walloon Parliament and the Walloon Government. Bringing together the provinces of the historic Walloon region, it is made up of 262 municipalities spread over five provinces (Walloon Brabant, Hainaut, Liège, Luxembourg and Namur), its area is 16,901 km² (which makes it the largest region in Belgium) and its population was 3,645,243 inhabitants (i.e. the second most populated) in 2020, which makes it the least densely populated region of Belgium (216 inhab./km²); its official capital is Namur, Liège being often cited as the economic capital.

The region brings together spaces that are very different from each other, both geographically and sociologically, economically and culturally, for example, we can distinguish the Sambre-et-Meuse furrow from the Ardennes or the Hautes-Fagnes. French, the majority in the region and German, spoken mainly in the eastern cantons, are the two official languages of the region. The heterogeneity between the Walloon and Flemish regions was very marked during the last half of the 20th century, in particular with the tensions at the Catholic University of Louvain but also between political parties with a rise of Flemish nationalism in Flanders (N- VA) and since the last municipal and provincial elections in 2018, the Vlaams Belang.
