Lisbon is the capital and largest city of Portugal. Located at the mouth of the Tagus River (Tejo), it is the capital of the country, capital of the Lisbon district, of the Lisbon region, of the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon, and is also the main center of the Greater Lisbon sub-region. The city has a population of 547 773 inhabitants and its metropolitan area has 2 810 923 inhabitants in an area of 2921.90 km². This area contains 20% of the country's population. Lisbon is the richest city in Portugal.

The municipality of Lisbon, which coincides with the city proper (excluding the larger continuous urban agglomeration that surrounds it), has an area of 100.05 km², in which in 2011 there were 547 733 inhabitants. it is 5 474.59 hab / km². The municipality is subdivided into 24 freguesias (civil parishes) and borders on the north with the municipalities of Odivelas and Loures, on the west with Oeiras, on the northwest with Amadora and on the southeast with the Tajo estuary. Through the estuary, Lisbon joins the municipalities of the South Margin: Almada, Seixal, Barreiro, Moita, Montijo and Alcochete.
