The Middle East is a transcontinental region centered on Western Asia, Turkey (both Asian and European), and Egypt (which is mostly in North Africa), it is approximately equivalent to the southwest of Asia, reason why it is often confused with the expression Near East or Western Asia.

This area is home to several cultural and ethnic groups, including Persian, Turkish, Arab, Kurdish and Jewish culture. The three main language groups are Iranian, Turkish and Semitic (including Arabic, Amharic and Hebrew). The definition of the Middle East, both established in reference books and commonly used, defines the region as "the nations of Southwest Asia, from Iran to Egypt". The Middle East with its countries and capitals

The Middle East area includes at least the Fertile Crescent (Palestine, Jordan, Iraq, Israel, Syria, Turkey and Lebanon), the Arabian Peninsula (Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait) and the valley. of the Nile (Egypt). The Islamic Republic of Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan are sometimes added (from the definition inherited from the British Empire). The United States does not hesitate to include the Maghreb States (Mauritania, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya), as shown by the "Greater Middle East" expression.

Most of the countries that border the Persian Gulf have vast reserves of crude oil, with monarchs of the Arabian Peninsula in particular benefiting economically from petroleum exports.
